hot pursuit

Close behind, gaining

Hot pursuit is the immediate chase of a fleeing suspect by law enforcement.

The legal doctrine allows police to cross jurisdictional boundaries or enter private property without a warrant when closely following someone who has committed or is suspected of committing a crime: Officers entered the building in hot pursuit of the armed robber.

The phrase appears in less urgent contexts to mean any energetic chase or search: She was in hot pursuit of a promotion.
