spotted lanternfly
Tree-of-heaven pest
The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect native to Asia that has become a significant agricultural pest in parts of the eastern United States since its discovery there in 2014.
Despite its name, it is not a fly but a planthopper that feeds on the sap of trees and vines, damaging crops like grapes, apples, and hops.
Adults have distinctive gray forewings with black spots and bright red hindwings.
Residents in affected areas are often urged to kill them on sight and report sightings to authorities.
