spirit levels
Carpenter's alignment tools
Spirit levels are tools for determining whether a surface is perfectly horizontal or vertical.
A sealed glass tube contains liquid with an air bubble; when the bubble centers between marked lines, the surface is level.
The "spirit" refers to the alcohol traditionally used as the liquid.
Carpenters and builders rely on spirit levels to ensure walls, shelves, and foundations are true.
