spec scripts
Uncommissioned film drafts
Spec scripts are screenplays written without a commission or contract, created on speculation that a studio or producer will buy them.
Writers produce these on their own time and dime, hoping to sell the finished product or use it as a calling card to demonstrate their abilities: She's been shopping her spec script around Hollywood for months.
The term applies to both original screenplays and unsolicited scripts for existing television series.
