action lines

Drawn motion trails

Action lines are the prose descriptions in a screenplay that convey everything except dialogue—settings, character movements, visual details, and events as they unfold on screen.

Also called scene description or direction, action lines are written in present tense and kept lean: She crosses to the window. Rain streaks the glass.

Good action lines create visual momentum without directing the camera or telling actors how to feel.
