sp2 hybridization
Planar carbon geometry
Sp2 hybridization is a mixing of atomic orbitals that produces three equivalent hybrid orbitals arranged in a flat, triangular geometry with 120° angles between them.
One unhybridized p orbital remains perpendicular to this plane, available to form pi bonds.
This arrangement appears in double-bonded carbons like ethylene and in the flat structure of benzene rings: The sp2 hybridization of graphene gives it its remarkable properties.
