southing

Distance traveled southward

Southing refers to movement or distance traveled in a southerly direction, used primarily in navigation and surveying.

When a ship or aircraft moves south, its southing is the component of its progress measured along a north-south axis.

The term appears in contrast with northing, and both are used alongside easting and westing to describe directional components of travel.

The vessel made good southing despite the crosswinds.
