social justice warrior

Progressive cause champion

Social justice warrior is a dismissive term for someone seen as aggressively promoting progressive causes—racial equity, gender identity, environmental issues—especially online.

Originally neutral or positive, it became pejorative in the 2010s, implying performative outrage or moral grandstanding rather than genuine activism: The comments were full of SJWs attacking anyone who disagreed.

Often abbreviated SJW.
