snap count
Quarterback's verbal trigger
In American football, the snap count is the signal—usually a number or word called by the quarterback—that tells the center when to snap the ball and the offense when to move.
Teams vary their snap count to keep defenses from anticipating the play: He drew them offsides with a hard count on two.
A player who jumps the snap count moves too early.
