smoke trails
Jet exhaust paths
Smoke trails are the visible lines of smoke left behind by aircraft, rockets, or pyrotechnics as they move through the air.
Fighter jets at air shows leave smoke trails for dramatic effect; missiles leave them as a byproduct of combustion.
The term also applies to the lingering wisps from fireworks, skywriting planes, or signal flares: We watched the smoke trails dissolve against the evening sky.
