singlestick

Wooden fencing trainer

Singlestick is a fencing exercise or sport using a wooden stick about a yard long, typically with a basket hilt to protect the hand.

Popular in Britain through the 19th century as training for saber combat, it was also a competitive sport in its own right.

The term also refers to the stick itself.
