silverbacks
Dominant male apes
Silverbacks are mature male gorillas, typically over twelve years old, named for the distinctive patch of silver-gray hair that develops across their backs.
A silverback leads and protects his troop, making decisions about feeding and travel.
The term extends figuratively to dominant older men in any group: The silverbacks in the boardroom resisted the merger.
