signal caller
Offense's field leader
A signal caller is someone who directs action by giving commands or cues.
In American football, it's the quarterback—the player who calls plays and initiates action at the line of scrimmage: He's been the team's signal caller for three seasons.
The term extends to anyone who makes key decisions or directs others in high-pressure situations.
