sidebands

Modulation's spectral byproducts

Sidebands are frequencies produced above and below a carrier wave when a signal is modulated—the result of combining two frequencies in radio transmission.

The carrier frequency sits in the center; sidebands carry the actual information.

In single-sideband transmission, one sideband is filtered out to save bandwidth: amateur radio operators often use single sideband.

The term extends figuratively to secondary effects or implications accompanying a main signal or message.
