overmodulation
Excessive amplitude distortion
Overmodulation occurs when an audio or radio signal exceeds its intended amplitude limits, causing distortion or clipping.
In broadcasting, overmodulation degrades signal quality and can interfere with adjacent frequencies.
The term extends to any excessive adjustment that overwhelms a system: The guitar's overmodulation created that fuzzy, distorted sound.
