shopfloor

Where workers labor

The shopfloor is the area of a factory or workshop where production happens—where workers operate machinery and assemble products, as distinct from offices or management spaces.

The term often carries class connotations, representing ordinary workers versus executives: Decisions made in the boardroom don't always make sense on the shopfloor.
