sexually transmitted infection
Carnal contact disease
A sexually transmitted infection, or STI, is an infection passed from one person to another through sexual contact—including vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
Common examples include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, and HIV.
The term has largely replaced "sexually transmitted disease" (STD) in medical contexts, since many infections cause no symptoms and thus aren't technically diseases.
