semantic web
Interconnected concept map
The semantic web is an extension of the World Wide Web in which data is structured and tagged so that machines can interpret meaning, not just display content.
The idea is that computers could understand relationships between pieces of information—knowing that a "date" on a concert page is an event time, not a fruit.
Semantic web technologies let different databases talk to each other.
The vision, championed by web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, has been partially realized through standards like RDF and linked data. (Capitalized as Semantic Web when referring to the specific W3C initiative.)
