self-watering

Needs no tending

Self-watering describes containers or planters designed to supply water to plants automatically from a built-in reservoir.

The soil draws moisture upward as needed, reducing how often you water by hand: I use self-watering pots for my herbs since I travel frequently.

The term applies to any system where plants regulate their own water intake.
