self-rescuer
Miner's escape mask
A self-rescuer is a portable breathing device designed for emergency escape from hazardous atmospheres, especially in mining.
Unlike standard respirators, self-rescuers are compact enough to carry at all times and provide enough breathable air—typically 30 to 60 minutes—to reach safety: Every miner is required to carry a self-rescuer underground.
