ascription
Attributing to someone
Ascription is the act of attributing something to a cause, source, or person: the ascription of the painting to Vermeer, the ascription of blame to the victim.
The word appears most often in academic and formal contexts, where it describes how qualities, works, or responsibility get assigned—whether accurately or not.
