sea shell

Mollusk's former home

A sea shell is the hard outer covering of a marine mollusk—a snail, clam, oyster, or similar creature.

Beachcombers collect them; children hold them to their ears to "hear the ocean." The term applies whether the shell still houses its animal or lies empty on the shore.

Also spelled seashell.
