scup

Small coastal fish

Scup is a fish found along the Atlantic coast of North America, prized by recreational anglers and valued as a food fish.

It has a compressed, oval body with silvery scales and is related to the porgy.

The name comes from Narragansett, an Algonquian language.

We caught a dozen scup off the pier this morning.
