scumble
Haze over paint
Scumble is a painting technique where a thin, opaque layer of paint is applied lightly over a dried layer, allowing the underlayer to show through partially.
The effect softens colors and creates atmospheric depth.
As a verb, to scumble is to apply paint this way: She scumbled white over the blue to suggest distant fog.
The technique differs from glazing, which uses transparent layers.
