scumbled

Scumbled describes a painting technique where a thin, opaque layer of paint is applied loosely over a dried layer beneath, allowing the underlayer to show through partially.

The effect softens edges and creates atmospheric depth: The artist scumbled white over the dark background to suggest mist.

The technique contrasts with glazing, which uses transparent layers.
