schematization

Making structural outlines

Schematization is the process of reducing something complex to a simplified diagram or framework.

The word appears most often in academic contexts, where it can mean organizing information into categories or patterns: Her schematization of medieval trade routes clarified the economic relationships.

The result—the schema itself—necessarily leaves out detail in favor of clarity.
