scene blocking
Planning performer movement
Scene blocking is the planned arrangement and movement of actors within a performance space.
Directors block scenes to establish spatial relationships, sight lines, and dramatic emphasis: We spent the morning blocking the confrontation scene.
The term extends to film and television, where blocking also accounts for camera positions and angles.
