sand rat

Burrowing dune dweller

A sand rat is any of several rodents adapted to desert environments, particularly gerbils native to North Africa and the Middle East.

The fat sand rat stores food rather than fat, despite its name.

Sand rat also appears as a disparaging term for people from desert regions, particularly Arabs—offensive when used this way.
