Accidental discharge preventer
A safety catch is a mechanism that prevents accidental discharge or activation—most commonly on firearms, where it locks the trigger until deliberately released.
The term extends to other devices with similar protective locks: Check the safety catch before cleaning the gun.
Often shortened to simply "the safety."
