sabots

Carved peasant shoes

Sabots are wooden shoes, traditionally worn by peasants and workers in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

The shoe is carved from a single block of wood.

Sabots also refers to wooden or metal casings that hold projectiles in firearms, discarded after firing.

The word gives us sabotage—supposedly from workers throwing sabots into machinery, though this origin is disputed.
