root folder
Top storage level
The root folder is the top-level directory in a file system hierarchy, from which all other folders branch.
On Windows, it's typically C:\; on Unix-like systems, it's simply /.
The metaphor treats the file structure as an inverted tree, with the root at the top and subdirectories spreading downward like branches.
