parent directory
One level up
In computing, a parent directory is the folder that contains the current directory—one level up in a hierarchical file system.
If you're working in /users/documents/projects, the parent directory is /users/documents.
The symbol .. represents the parent directory in most systems: cd .. moves you up one level.
Every directory has a parent except the root.
