rooster-tail

Speedboat's arcing spray

A rooster-tail is the fan-shaped spray of water thrown up behind a fast-moving boat, jet ski, or water-skier—named for its resemblance to a rooster's tail feathers.

The term extends to similar plumes kicked up by vehicles on wet roads or dirt: The truck left a rooster-tail of mud behind it.
