rip saw

Cuts with grain

A rip saw is a handsaw designed to cut wood along the grain, as opposed to a crosscut saw that cuts across it.

The teeth are filed straight across rather than angled, acting like tiny chisels that scoop out wood fibers: Use a rip saw for cutting boards lengthwise.
