rex sacrorum
Sacred king priest
Rex sacrorum is a Roman religious title meaning "king of sacred rites." After Rome expelled its kings, this priest preserved certain royal religious duties that only a king could perform.
The position was prestigious but largely ceremonial, ranking below the pontifex maximus in the priestly hierarchy: The rex sacrorum presided over the announcement of festivals.
