residual volume

Unexhalable air amount

Residual volume is the amount of air remaining in the lungs after a maximum exhalation—typically about 1.2 liters in adults.

This air cannot be expelled voluntarily; it keeps the alveoli from collapsing completely.

The term appears in pulmonary function testing, where abnormal residual volume can indicate conditions like emphysema or restrictive lung disease.
