alveolar ventilation
Breathing reaching bloodstream
Alveolar ventilation is the volume of air that reaches the alveoli—the tiny sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs—per unit of time.
It excludes air that fills the airways but never participates in oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange.
The term appears in respiratory physiology and clinical medicine: Her alveolar ventilation was compromised by shallow breathing.
