religious scholars
Interpreters of faith
Religious scholars are people who study religion academically or interpret religious texts and traditions authoritatively.
The term covers both secular academics who analyze religion from historical, sociological, or comparative perspectives and clergy or theologians who work within a faith tradition: Religious scholars have debated the passage's meaning for centuries.
Islamic religious scholars may issue fatwas; Jewish religious scholars interpret halakha; Christian religious scholars range from seminary professors to church fathers.
