redstarts

Small colorful warblers

Redstarts are small songbirds named for their distinctive reddish tails—"start" being an old word for tail.

The European redstart and the American redstart belong to different families but share the flickering tail behavior.

They're active insect-eaters, often seen flitting through woodland undergrowth: A redstart darted between the branches.
