red wall
Burgundy-painted standing divider
Red wall refers to a group of constituencies in northern England, the Midlands, and Wales that traditionally voted Labour for generations—so reliably that they formed a metaphorical wall of red (Labour's color) on electoral maps.
The term gained prominence when many of these seats voted Conservative in the 2019 general election: The Tories broke through the red wall.
It now describes working-class areas with historically strong Labour loyalty that have become politically contested.
