rebasing

Moving the baseline

Rebasing is adjusting data or calculations to a new reference point.

In statistics and economics, you rebase an index when you shift its base year: The CPI was rebased to 2020.

In software development, particularly Git, rebasing moves a series of commits to a new starting point, rewriting project history to create a cleaner sequence: I rebased my branch onto main before merging.

The term extends to any recalculation from a fresh baseline.
