rear up

Stand on hindlegs

When an animal rears up, it rises on its hind legs with forelegs raised: The horse reared up and threw its rider.

The phrase extends to things that rise dramatically or emerge suddenly: Mountains reared up before us, Old fears reared up again.

Without "up," rear alone carries the same meaning for animals.
