rainsticks

Cactus-spine instruments

Rainsticks are long, hollow tubes filled with small objects—beads, pebbles, or seeds—that create a sound resembling falling rain when tilted.

Traditionally made from dried cactus with internal pins, they originated in South America as ceremonial instruments.

Today they appear in music education, meditation, and as decorative items: The children took turns tipping the rainstick to hear it rain.
