radioastronomy

Studying celestial emissions

Radioastronomy is the branch of astronomy that studies celestial objects and phenomena by detecting the radio waves they emit rather than visible light.

Radio telescopes—large dish antennas or arrays of antennas—capture these signals from sources like pulsars, quasars, and distant galaxies.

The field has revealed cosmic features invisible to optical telescopes, including the cosmic microwave background radiation left over from the Big Bang.

Also spelled as two words: radio astronomy.
