publication date
When it drops
Publication date is when a work becomes publicly available—the official release of a book, article, or other media.
For books, this is when copies go on sale; for academic journals, when an issue appears.
Citation formats require publication dates to identify sources: The publication date appears on the copyright page.
Digital publishing has complicated matters, as online articles may show multiple dates for posting, updating, and correction.
