protoplast
Cell without wall
A protoplast is a plant, bacterial, or fungal cell that has had its cell wall removed, leaving only the membrane-bound contents.
Scientists create protoplasts in the laboratory to study cell biology, facilitate genetic modification, or fuse cells from different species: The protoplasts were isolated for transformation experiments.
In older biological usage, protoplast referred more broadly to the living material within any cell.
