profess
Claim to believe
To profess is to declare or claim something openly: He professed his love, She professed ignorance of the scheme.
The claim may be sincere or dubious—someone who professes beliefs may or may not hold them genuinely.
In academic contexts, to profess a subject is to teach it as a professor.
A professed nun or monk has taken formal religious vows.
