consecutive sentences
Back-to-back prison terms
Consecutive sentences are criminal penalties served one after another rather than at the same time.
A judge who imposes consecutive sentences for multiple convictions requires the defendant to complete each term in sequence: He received two consecutive sentences of ten years, meaning he'll serve twenty.
The opposite arrangement—concurrent sentences—allows terms to run simultaneously.
