pressganging

Coerced naval enlistment

Pressganging is forcing people into military or naval service against their will.

The practice was common in 18th-century Britain, where press gangs roamed port towns seizing men for the Royal Navy.

Now used figuratively for any coercive recruitment: They pressganged me into organizing the office party.

Also spelled press-ganging.
