press defense
Full-court defensive pressure
A press defense in basketball is an aggressive defensive strategy where players guard opponents over the full court or half court, rather than waiting near their own basket.
The goal is to disrupt the offense by pressuring ball handlers into turnovers: They broke the press with a quick outlet pass.
A full-court press applies pressure the entire length of the floor and has become a metaphor for any intense, sustained effort: The company launched a full-court press to win the contract.
